Posting Methods

Page history last edited by Ping.fm 14 years, 11 months ago

Due to the variety and complexity of the social networks and services we support, we've created what are called posting methods.  We've done this to give you optimal flexibility with your account configuration.

There are three types of posting methods; status updates, micro-blogging and blogging.    The differences are simple.  Status updates are messages that describe what you are doing.

Example: "is writing a help page."

Most sites will interpret this message as "USERNAME is writing a help page."  Where USERNAME would essentially be your username on that particular network.

Most, if not all the social networks we support accept status update messages.

Micro-blogs are simple, straight to the point messages that are generally 160 characters or shorter.  Read more about micro-blogging on the Wikipedia page about micro-blogging.  Most of the social networks we support accept micro-blog messages.

And finally, blogging.  Blogging is just that, a blog.  It's a comprehensive post containing a post title and a post body and are generally pretty lengthy.  If you aren't familiar with blogs, you can get a feel for them on our blog.

Now that you are familiar with methods, and what they do, here's how to use them with your Ping.fm account.

If you aren't using the dashboard to post your messages, you can still retain the same functionality through specific message syntax.

Certain character combinations in messages tell us how to interpret the message you are posting.  This is done inline with the message and is easy as cake.

Here are some examples:

@s is walking the dog. - Posting this message would tell us that the message is a status update (@s) and to only post to social networks you have set up to receive status update messages.

@m This website rules. - Posting this message would tell us that the message is a micro-blog and to only post to social networks you have set up to receive micro-blog messages.

Now to get a little tricky.  Posting blogs is a bit different from status updates and micro-blogs because the message requires a title.  If you aren't using an interface that has a place to enter a title, you can still add one to the message by separating the message title from the message body by using the "^" character.

@b This is a blog title^This is a blog body, neat! - Posting this message would tell us that the message is a blog and to only post to social networks you have set up to receive blog messages.
